Quick start

Choose your first path

There are two clean entry points. Use the web app if you want YouTube links, uploads, or a public sample lesson. Use the extension if you want to study directly inside a supported player.

Open the watch page, try a ready-made lesson, paste a YouTube URL, or upload your own file. Guests can watch and click words before creating an account.

For verbs and nouns, use the base form to see what you should actually remember.

Look for context

A word is easier to retain when you keep the surrounding subtitle line attached to it.

Streaming platforms

YouTube, Netflix, and supported players are the fast path when subtitles already exist and the lesson should feel immediate.

If subtitles are missing or browser playback is blocked, switch to the Butterfluent watch page rather than forcing the wrong path.

The extension is not a separate product island. Saved study signals should still feed the same learning loop.

Use the active subtitle line as the unit of study. Replay that line, not the whole scene, when the problem is local.

Tune the study surface, not just the video

Small layout and playback choices change whether a session feels usable. Adjust Butterfluent until the subtitles feel readable and the player matches your study tolerance.

Keep German as the main subtitle line and English as support underneath.
Adjust size, position, background opacity, and reading comfort for longer sessions.
Use the lighter path first: native subtitles when available, AI subtitle generation when they are not.

Playback and repetition

Slow playback down when the dialogue is dense instead of brute-forcing full speed.
Replay the active line when a phrase is almost clear but not quite automatic yet.
Use the player as a study tool, not just a passive video window.

Audio and focus

Listen once, then click only the words that matter. Do not stop the flow for every unknown token.
Use pronunciation and sentence context to decide whether a word deserves saving.
Short focused sessions beat long distracted ones.

Pro tips

Start with easier German than your ego wants. The right session feels slightly challenging, not impossible.
Treat replay as a scalpel, not a hammer. Repeat the line that matters, then move on.
A saved word without context is weaker than a saved phrase from a memorable scene.
Do not try to convert every watch session into a full review session. Separate understanding from drilling when needed.
