Butterfluent works best when it stays close to the actual thing you want: understanding real German while watching. Start light, click only what matters, and save the useful parts for review later.
Quick start
There are two clean entry points. Use the web app if you want YouTube links, uploads, or a public sample lesson. Use the extension if you want to study directly inside a supported player.
Web app path
First session
Open the watch page, try a ready-made lesson, paste a YouTube URL, or upload your own file. Guests can watch and click words before creating an account.
Extension path
First session
Install the extension if you want to study directly inside YouTube, Netflix, and supported streaming players with dual subtitles and inline lookup.
Word lookup
Click once
Get the translation, grammatical role, and the exact form you are seeing on screen.
Check the base form
For verbs and nouns, use the base form to see what you should actually remember.
Look for context
A word is easier to retain when you keep the surrounding subtitle line attached to it.
Ich möchte einen Kaffee bestellen.
Clicking “bestellen” reveals the translation, infinitive, and usage in context.
When a word or phrase finally clicks in context, that is the best time to keep it. Butterfluent is meant to capture that moment before it disappears.
Decks and cards are not separate busywork. They are the follow-through layer for the vocabulary you already met in a real scene.
The review queue gets stronger when it stays selective. Use it for recurring words, stubborn phrases, and genuinely useful German.
Practical sequence
Step 1
Watch until a line matters
Step 2
Click the part that blocks meaning
Step 3
Save the useful word or phrase
Step 4
Review it later instead of interrupting the whole session
Streaming platforms
YouTube, Netflix, and supported players are the fast path when subtitles already exist and the lesson should feel immediate.
Fallback path
If subtitles are missing or browser playback is blocked, switch to the Butterfluent watch page rather than forcing the wrong path.
Vocabulary sync
The extension is not a separate product island. Saved study signals should still feed the same learning loop.
Replay and control
Use the active subtitle line as the unit of study. Replay that line, not the whole scene, when the problem is local.
Settings
Small layout and playback choices change whether a session feels usable. Adjust Butterfluent until the subtitles feel readable and the player matches your study tolerance.
Pro tips
Next steps
The best tutorial is still a real study session. Try the watch page or extension, then use the community board or feedback flow to point at the next thing that should be simpler.
