Travel vocabulary is practical from day one if you visit German-speaking countries. Germany, Austria, and Switzerland have excellent public transport networks — knowing these words makes navigating trains, buses, and the Hauptbahnhof significantly easier. These words also appear constantly in German TV series.
Grammar tip
German compound nouns are particularly common in travel vocabulary: Bahnhof (train station) = Bahn (train/rail) + Hof (yard/courtyard). Once you know the components, compound words become decipherable. Der Hauptbahnhof = der Haupt (main) + der Bahnhof (station).

Both mean ticket, but they are used in different contexts. Die Fahrkarte (literally 'travel card') is the traditional German word for a train or bus ticket, especially in public transport. Das Ticket is borrowed from English and is used more broadly — for concerts, flights, online bookings. In everyday speech, both are understood, but die Fahrkarte sounds more native in public transport contexts.
The standard phrase is: Der Zug hat Verspätung — literally 'the train has delay'. You can specify how late: Der Zug hat zwanzig Minuten Verspätung (the train is twenty minutes late). Die Verspätung is one of the most-used words by travellers in Germany, as German trains are not always as punctual as their reputation suggests.
