Butterfluent generates AI German subtitles for any video, lets you click any word for instant grammar analysis, and exports flashcards to Anki. Here's exactly how it works.
Butterfluent is an AI-powered German language learning app that works with any video you want to watch. Instead of studying artificial German sentences in a language app, you learn German from content you actually enjoy — German TV shows, German YouTube, German films, or any video you upload. The core idea: language is acquired best when you understand meaningful content, not when you drill isolated exercises. Butterfluent makes any German video into a German lesson — without it feeling like studying.
Getting started with Butterfluent is simple. Upload any video file (MP4, MKV, WebM) from your computer — a German film, a German TV episode, a German YouTube video you've downloaded, or any content you want to learn from. Alternatively, paste any YouTube URL directly into Butterfluent and the video loads with automatic caption extraction or AI transcription. There's no limit on content type: German dramas, German comedies, German documentaries, German news, German YouTube vlogs, German cooking shows, German language learning videos — anything works. If your video has existing German subtitles, Butterfluent uses them. If not, Butterfluent's AI generates German subtitles automatically using Groq Whisper AI transcription.
Once your video is loaded, Butterfluent displays dual subtitles as you watch: the original German subtitle line appears on screen, and the English translation appears below it. You can adjust subtitle size, position (top, centre, bottom, or free placement), font, and display settings to suit your screen and preference. The German subtitles are displayed word by word with each word colour-coded by noun gender — masculine nouns (der) appear in blue, feminine nouns (die) in red/pink, neuter nouns (das) in green. This constant visual reinforcement of German noun genders is one of the most requested features for German learners and one that no other subtitle tool provides.
This is where Butterfluent transforms passive watching into active German learning. Click any word in the German subtitle and a popup appears immediately with: the English translation, the base form (infinitive for verbs, nominative singular for nouns), the part of speech (noun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, etc.), for nouns: the gender (der/die/das), plural form, and the article, for verbs: the tense, conjugation form, and infinitive, an optional grammar tip for particularly tricky forms. You can also select multiple words to analyse entire German phrases and idioms as a unit — essential for understanding expressions that can't be translated word by word. The analysis uses Anthropic Claude Haiku AI for instant, accurate German grammar analysis.
Any word you click and want to remember can be saved to your personal German vocabulary list with one click. The saved word includes: the word, its English meaning, the example sentence from the German video where you encountered it, the gender (for nouns), and the base form. Your vocabulary list is accessible from any device. When you're ready to review, export your saved German vocabulary as an Anki-compatible flashcard deck (.apkg file). Import it into Anki and your German vocabulary review integrates seamlessly with the world's best spaced repetition system. The vocabulary you build from real German video content — with emotional and visual memory attached — sticks dramatically better than vocabulary from app exercises. Butterfluent bridges the gap between German course completion and real German fluency.
